The summit was about 0.25 miles away. 180 feet of additional gain. Someone said ten minutes. I laughed. At that point in the day, ten minutes was a lifetime.

We went.

Two years of Sundays building the account. San Jacinto was the largest draw on it yet.

A month prior, at 5:43 on a Monday morning, walking the golf course loop, a podcast guest stopped me mid-stride. Dr. Tommy Wood drew a distinction I had never made.

Different types of exercise benefit different parts of the brain.

Closed skill is fixed, repetitive, predictable. The basal ganglia handle the automation; the brain processes effort, not surroundings. Open skill requires a continuous response to an unpredictable environment. It forces the prefrontal cortex to navigate variables that cannot be automated. That specific load builds structural cognitive reserve.

The golf course loop was a closed skill. I was walking it on autopilot.

Over time, even the Sunday hikes become a closed skill.

Familiar routes. Fast pace. Ten miles where the body knows the routine.

The Garmin logs a physical redline. It records sustained intervals climbing into Zone 4 and Zone 5. Because the environment is automated, the brain does not have to actively navigate. It does not have to fight the terrain. The predictable loop allows the mind to stay quiet while the heart rate maxes out.

The Sunday hikes were building a threshold for stress that the watch could only index as a physical metric.

Technical, higher-elevation peaks demand something else. Loose rock. Exposed ridgeline. The terrain never repeats.

San Jacinto. 16.51 miles. 5,433 feet of gain.

This is an open skill. A continuous motor response to an unpredictable environment. The brain wants to automate the movement, but the terrain denies it.

The final descent was loose rock, sand, and tree roots. Zero automation. Every footfall required an explicit decision before the weight shifted. I wanted to close my eyes and coast.

The trail refused.

The Garmin logged the distance, the elevation, the zone distribution. Primary Benefit: Base (Low Aerobic).

It was right about the cardiovascular data. It was completely blind to the cognitive load.

A biometric dashboard cannot index an open skill. The watch logged a low-stakes recovery loop. The brain was executing a stress test.

The automated Sunday miles executed the physics of the ascent. By minimizing the cognitive load, the prefrontal cortex retained the capacity to navigate the descent.

Showing up week after week on ordinary, predictable mornings feels like repetition. It does not feel like preparation.

Consistency builds a currency the data cannot track. The balance remains invisible while the miles accumulate. It only becomes evident when something harder arrives. What was built on ordinary mornings is all that's left to finish on.
